Charisse focused snip to snip. The gray haired woman was a regular customer who kept her hair short. Charisse didn’t want to mess it up just because she had a Billionaire trying to take over her business.

Snip. Comb. Snip.

She needed to tell her lady luvs what was going on. This would be completely out of the blue to them no matter what. But it seemed like it would be worse if she told them before she had all the details. Marie had freaked her out more than she wanted to admit. She hadn’t read the initial documents Daddy had drawn up. The more she thought of the day when she’d signed them, the more it seemed Daddy had practically insisted she sign without reading them. It had to be nerves. Daddy wouldn’t make her do anything that she didn’t want to do.

Except she didn’t want Conor as a business partner, and Daddy was forcing her into that. Continue reading

The numbers on the pages meant nothing to Conor. He’d been staring at them for about ten minutes without reading them. The flowers should’ve arrived a couple of hours ago and he hadn’t heard a word. Of course, there was no reason she should call him, especially if she wasn’t in favor of him becoming a partner.

Douchey. She probably didn’t want anything to do with him. Continue reading

Charisse paused to stare at the facade of her salon. Gold edging on beige paint immediately brought France and royalty to mind, at least for Charisse. And apparently Conor. Maybe they could work together. He’d noticed her Versailles theme right away. Working with a suit was entirely different than dating a suit. She wouldn’t care if he stayed detached all the time…in fact it would be preferable. Continue reading

B&B Episode 2: Scene 2

Charisse stood on the curb and allowed the clash of horns and shouting to fill her head. She stared unseeing at the traffic going by. There was no way Conor should want anything to do with her salon. It had barely started making a profit. Any three of her father’s paintings would be worth far more than her business.

“Hey, ma laideur, let’s go,” said Marie. Continue reading

Enjoy!

episode2

Ma Charisse was abuzz the day after Marie’s date with Conor. It seemed as though there was a social media blitz with pictures of the two of them together on the couch at the cocktail party. As much as it was taboo to use cellphones for pictures at those events, a few people always seemed to get away with it. One of Charisse’s lady luvs had been kind enough to show Charisse a picture of Marie pouring a shot down Conor’s throat. She’d wanted to stab the screen with her scissors, but had just as quickly been confused by the emotion. It didn’t matter if Conor had let Marie do that. She wasn’t interested in him. Conor stared across the desk at Roy. The air conditioner was off once again, and Roy’s face already shined like a tomato in the sun.

Roy said, “So I heard that you and Marie went out last night.”

“That had nothing to do with the lost cargo.” Continue reading

Charisse had crashed out early on her bed, exhausted but unable to get to sleep. When she heard keys in the apartment door, she sat up and slipped off the mattress. Marie hardly ever brought her dates back to their apartment, but she couldn’t imagine the night was already over.

She cracked her door open and peered out into the living area.

“It’s safe, Charisse,” said Marie. “I didn’t bring the asshole home.”

Charisse opened her door and padded out on the thick beige carpet. For a moment she was glad they hadn’t hit it off. Then she got angry that he treated her sister badly. “What happened?”

Marie dropped onto the couch, kicked her heels off and set her feet on the coffee table. “Your assessment of men in suits is turning out to be truer and truer.”

Charisse sat down on the couch with one knee pressed to her chest. “I’m sorry. What are you going to do?”

“You mean who am I going to do.”

“Marie!” Charisse blushed and pushed Marie’s shoulder.

“I’m serious. Rich men are leaving me cold lately.”

“So date a starving artist or someone not so rich. You have plenty of money.”

“Whatever people say, men don’t like women who have more money than they do. It’s the natural state of things.”

Marie looked worn out, not just from a bad date, but from years of dating men she ultimately never liked.

“Take a break for a while.”

“I probably should. But what about you? It’s been a year.”

Charisse turned away and hugged both knees to her chest. Even though she’d imagined herself with Conor, the suggestion of actually dating again made her gut twist and churn the stir-fry she’d eaten earlier.

“I can’t.”

Marie put a hand on her shoulder. For all that Marie took her for granted with hairdos and manicures, she had her moments of sisterly sympathy. “You’re not hung up on money like I am. There’s a whole world of men out there for you.”

Charisse shook her head and blinked fast. The pain from the past could still overwhelm her. She saw herself on the hospital bed with blood pumping back into her veins. “I can’t imagine ever trusting anyone again. I almost died.”

Marie sighed and leaned over to kiss the top of her head. “Time for some Jane Austen. Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility?”

Charisse couldn’t answer. She was too wrapped up in the past.

Pride and Prejudice it is then. I know how you love Darcy.”

Charisse managed a small smile. Darcy was a rat bastard who turned out to be a knight in shining armor. She wished the real world could be that way.

Today through Friday, Corporate Fire is free on Kindle! Please read it! And I would love a review!
