Romance Costumes

Halloween Costumes are of course a part of my novel Masked Hearts, but I don’t want to give that part away so I won’t be posting an excerpt 🙂

Halloween is my lover’s favorite holiday, so yes, I took advantage of him this year. I tend to the prettier costumes, but this year he suggested I go as medusa, and it was hard to argue with the awesome headpiece he made:OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACasting a creepy shadow, Medusa hunts for her pray.

Halloween Spider Web and Chocolate Winners!

MaskedHearts

In my new release, Masked Hearts, Mark creates a gothic display around his expansive home. Part of the decoration is a giant spider web that brings about a turning point in the relationship.

Her tires crunched the rocks into the dirt as she drove up the mountain road. A light flashed on the hill above her, and she caught a glimpse of a ghost blowing on one of his balconies. As she came around the final curve, she slowed her car and gawked until she pulled into the driveway.

Shutters with missing slats hung loose on nails where she didn’t remember there being any shutters to begin with. Enormous stuffed crows perched on the roof and the chimney. A few looked like they were flying down, and she couldn’t see any wires holding them up. The two balconies lit up alternately, showing a ghost and a skeleton. Gargoyles guarded each balcony. An enormous spiderweb hung between the patio and the middle balcony, lit by a black light. In the center of the web was a stuffed spider hanging down. Amongst the tangles of the web were cocoons with arms and legs sticking out as if the spider had caught some stray trick-or-treaters.

The spider web in the story was inspired by the one my lover puts up every year. This year I helped too, since I wanted to feature it on the blog 🙂

Holiday Cafe Bonus Giveaway: Hand Crafted Halloween Chocolate!

MaskedHearts

In Masked Hearts Sienna can’t bring herself to accept any gifts from sexy single dad Mark…even after breath taking sex. But Mark won’t let her leave without them:

Sienna’s whole body shook as she tried to get her sandals back on. What the fuck was she doing with this guy? She’d tied herself up for him but she wouldn’t speak to him. Everything about him was over-the-top wonderful, and she still couldn’t open her heart the tiniest crack. She’d really let Glen fuck her up.

When she finally managed to get her shoes on, she dug into her purse for her keys. Her hand grabbed a box instead. She pulled it out and found the gift Mark had left for her on the table. She fell to her knees and stared at it in her hands. After a few moments, she took the top off. Four handcrafted chocolates stared back at her. They each had a unique decoration: a bat, a pumpkin, a witch’s hat and a spiderweb.

They smelled like the richest chocolate she’d ever tasted, with a hint of caramel or maybe toffee. She put the lid back on. She shouldn’t keep it. The petals he’d shredded from the bouquet he’d given her last night surrounded her. She clutched the box as if she feared the chocolates would be somehow torn apart if she left them. That was a silly thought, but leaving the box would probably anger him. She slipped it into her purse, grabbed her keys and walked out the door.

The chocolates in Masked Hearts were inspired by the Moonstruck Chocolate Halloween line. I was lucky enough to find their spider and pumpkin truffles in a local grocery store yesterday.

Mark slipped his arm around Sienna’s waist underneath the tux jacket he’d wrapped around her shoulders outside of the hotel earlier as they entered the Holiday Cafe. He’d convinced her to let him drive and leave her car at the hotel until tomorrow. He never wanted to let her go again. The cafe buzzed with people too young to go to the clubs on Central but too old to hang out at McDonalds. He spied a nervous couple around Sienna’s age that must be on their first date. He tightened his grip on Sienna, realizing his present for her was in one of the jacket pockets. He’d just thought of a clever way to present it to her, but he needed the jacket back.

“Wow!” called Chloe. “You guys are smokin’ hot tonight.”

Sienna beamed. It was the first genuine smile he’d seen all night.

“Let me see the dress better.”

It was like Chloe read his mind. He’d have to give her a huge tip tonight, especially after all the goodies she sent with Sienna to the hospital. He took the jacket back as Sienna slipped it off her shoulders and spun slowly for Chloe to see.

Chloe whistled. “I love it.”

“Thanks,” said Sienna. “I spent a ton of money on this, and you’re the only one who said anything nice. Glen said I looked terrible.”

“Glen? What were you doing with him?”

“Long story, but Mark slugged him.”

Chloe held her hand up for a high five from Mark. “About time. I never liked that guy. But how have you not told Sienna she’s beautiful tonight?”

He slapped her hand, knowing his face turned crimson. “Believe me, I plan to make up for being remiss in that area.” He watched Sienna as he spoke, suddenly wishing they were alone in his bedroom. She was still pale, but her smile did wonders to assure him she was recovering. “Could we have two Toil and Troubles extra cinnamon?” He asked Sienna, “What do you want to eat?”

“A bacon Havarti sandwich sounds good.”

“Two of those.”

Sienna opened her purse, and he said, “What are you doing?”

“You’re always paying. I think it’s my turn.”

He frowned, worried money was still an issue between them. “You paid last night for me and the kids. My turn.” She sighed and closed her purse again. “The couch just freed up. Would you mind grabbing it?”

She nodded and made a beeline for the sofa.

He reached in the pocket of the jacket and pulled out a small velvet box. He asked Chloe, “Could you do me a favor?”

Sunday Coffee at the Holiday Cafe

MaskedHearts

Out October 11

Coffee Break

Sienna jerked around at the squealing tires. She recognized Mark’s Corvette right away and wanted to jump into her own car to get away. But she just stared instead. She didn’t want to go over to Carol’s house and eat lunch with her and Glen. Already her heart ached over how many times she and Glen had done that while they were engaged.

Mark pulled his car into a spot right in front of her. The cafe was fairly empty still—Chloe wasn’t even at work yet. Maybe she had Sunday off. Sienna clutched her Toil and Trouble to her chest as Mark hopped out of his car. “Hey,” he said, “I thought you sang in the choir.”

She wanted to laugh at herself for thinking the first thing out of his mouth would be something like, “That was a great fuck last night.” Of course he’d be more civil than that. And he’d better not mention last night at all. And if he did, he’d better say it was great.

She said, “We sing at the earlier service. The service going on now is contemporary, with a rock band and everything.”

He seemed to be suppressing a laugh. “Naturally, you go to the traditional service.”

She knew it was a reference to how he saw her as a paradox, but she chose to ignore it. It verged on talking about last night. “Did you come by for a Sunday morning coffee?”

“No. I had to go have a fight with my ex-wife. I was on my way home when I saw you pacing here. Is there a reason you’re outside? It’s pretty cold this morning.”

“It seems to be a day for exes. I’m supposed to go have lunch with mine and his mom.”

“That sounds awful. Why don’t you join me inside?”

Sienna held her breath. It shouldn’t be so strange since they’d talked in the cafe for a couple hours yesterday, but that was before they’d screwed like two strangers at a rave. And before he’d given her a rose and a card. “Just for a little bit.”

Release Date Reveal!

MaskedHearts

Coming to a Kindle near you Saturday October 11! Enjoy a taste:

Sienna drove into the parking spot and stopped just before her tire hit the sidewalk. Her mind was a tornado of parents, students and other teachers vying for her attention at the end of the week. Even the cute pumpkin lights decorating the awning of the Holiday Cafe with their faint glow battling the dusk failed to calm her. She stepped out of her car and closed the door. The blur in her mind finally paused when her gaze fell on a witch and bubbling cauldron drawn on the door with window paints. The caption read, “Taste our Toil and Trouble Latte.” Ahhh. Despite the name, the thought of the latte yanked her out of the school whirlwind and settled her spirit. She’d been waiting all week for this moment.

She opened the door, expecting the aroma of coffee to wrap her in bliss, but instead desire fired through her.

Mark Townsend stood at the counter—the most sought after single dad at the school. When class lists came out at the beginning of the year, the other kindergarten teachers had swarmed her and rattled off his stats as soon as they saw she had his youngest child Tyler: millionaire, architect, thirty-eight, divorced, great butt. She hadn’t thought much of the other teachers’ excitement. Just twenty-eight herself, she’d always dated men much closer to her own age, and never anyone corporate. But when he’d strolled into her classroom the first day of school with his pride in his son and casual confidence, she’d known she was in trouble.
