The two headed downstairs. He wanted to check on Charisse, but if she’d fallen asleep he didn’t want to wake her.

When they arrived at the bottom of the stairs, he saw his double doors open with security guards dressed in black suits standing at either side. He glanced towards the living area and saw the doctor he kept on call in The Hamptons sitting on one of his white leather couches.

Conor stopped and said to Raul, “What’s going on? Why is Dr. Beaumont here?”

Raul didn’t stop. He continued to walk towards the entrance. Conor strode fast to catch up with him.

When Dr. Beaumont saw them, she smiled. She was a tall woman, especially in the high heels she wore.

“Good to see you, Conor. How are the migraines?”

“Not too bad these days. What brings you here?”

Dr. Beaumont drew her eyebrows together. “Raul called me on your behalf. He said you have a lady friend staying with you who’s fallen ill.”

Heat spread over Conor’s face. He kept his expression straight as he glanced at Raul and then back to Dr. Beaumont. “I’m sorry, I hadn’t realized he’d called. She was feeling better this morning…”

“But seems to have had a relapse this afternoon,” said Raul. “I knew you were preoccupied with the party and didn’t want to disturb you.”

Conor stared at Raul. Raul had never gone behind his back like this before. The party was starting soon, so he’d have to deal with him later. He told Dr. Beaumont, “Raul’s right. I’ve been remiss. I’ll let her know you’re here. Raul will lead you up to the parlor.”

Without looking at Raul again, he turned back towards the staircase. He understood Raul being concerned about Charisse, but this was going too far.

He took the stairs two at a time and walked straight to Charisse’s room. After a quick knock, he heard her call for him to come in. He opened the door and saw her standing by the window in a beautiful blue frock sewn with lace over satin. She’d clipped her hair away from her face, but it tumbled down loose in the back.

She smiled and said, “I think I drank too much coffee. I seem to be a little shaky.” She took one step towards him and collapsed to the floor.
