“I did it out of loyalty to you,” said Raul.

Conor gaped.

“Yes, I’ve been worried about Charisse, but ultimately I called the doctor in an attempt to keep her away from the party.”

“How is that out of loyalty to me?” Conor felt his blood pressure rise. He needed to get a grip or he’d pass out too.

Raul’s phone dinged, but he didn’t check it. Raul said, “Becca offered me a large sum of money to keep Charisse away from the party.”

Conor knew his face turned crimson.

Raul rushed on. “I didn’t take it. But instead I made her a different offer. I said I’d do it, and this would be your last favor to her. She would never ask you to loan her money or buy into a company with her or anything. I hate the way she guilts you into anything she wants. You don’t need that.”

Conor dropped to the bed, stunned by Raul’s loyalty.

Raul continued, “I was worried this morning when I couldn’t convince Charisse to go into town, but I thought I’d try again when you returned to the mansion for lunch. When I saw how pale and tired she was like yesterday, I thought a doctor would insist she stay in bed during the party. And at least we would finally know what’s wrong with her and be able to help her.”

Conor ran his fingers through his hair in exasperation. “It was well timed, I’ll give you that. But what happens if the doctor gives her the all clear and Charisse shows up anyway?”

Raul looked down and tugged at his sleeve, revealing gray streaks that ran to the back of his head. “Becca continues to make your life miserable as usual.”

“I don’t believe it. Becca would want something more.”

Raul stared at the wall without answering him.

Conor hung his head with his elbows on his knees. There was surely more to the deal, but he couldn’t dwell on it. Charisse was sick, and guests were arriving.

Conor stood up and walked to Raul. “You’re an amazing assistant, but you’re terrible with business deals. Let me handle Becca.”

Raul finally looked at him and nodded.

“Thank you for what you tried to do.” He held out his hand, and Raul shook it. “Let’s go downstairs and play nice with Becca.”

“And Charisse?”

“I’m going to assume she’s okay with Dr. Beaumont there. If she comes down to the party after the examination, I’ll deal with it, including the fallout for whatever you agreed to with Becca.”

Raul nodded. “I’m sorry sir.”

“Just tell me next time someone offers you money to betray me.” He grinned, trying to add some levity to the situation. “You know I’ll double it.”
